Our group currently focuses on several quantum technology fields, such as analyzing 2D materials by first-principles calculation, spintronics simulations using non-equilibrium Green’s function, and quantum computing. Cooperate with international experiment team, we offer physical interpretations and provide reliable simulation results. We not only establish a theory to handle curvature effect for 2D materials but also keep developing simulation methods to handle photon, phonon, and magnetism interaction mechanism in nanoscale devices. Because of availability of IBM Q system, now we form a quantum algorithm team in order to solve financial and industrial problems.

Lab Introduction

Our laboratory is in the field of so-called AMO (atomic, molecular and optical science), especially we focus on high-precision measurement. Comb laser technology, which was appreciated by the Nobel committee at 2005, is the unique feature of our laboratory in Taiwan. We built up our own laser system for laser stabilization to atomic transition, that is the reason that students in our laboratory in general know about laser physics and electronics. Judging from our recent publications, you can find that we are able to offset lock laser frequency to sub-mini Hz level and we are able to build up secondary optical clock. Recently we collaborate with Japan gravitational wave observatory (Kagra) for a project of “photon calibrator”, by using comb laser technology.

Development of metallic-glass quantum dots for optoelectronic semiconductor applications

Lab Introduction

Our lab has over 15 years of experience in surface treatment and related applications. We are specialized in low friction, low surface energy, and anti-sticking metallic-glass coating. The technology has wide applications of medical, energy, nanotechnology as well as gained recognition by top international journals. In addition, we were granted more than 30 domestic and international patents for our technology. The state-funded Applied Research Center for Thin-Film Metallic Glass is hence established last year, 2018. Development of metallic-glass quantum dots for optoelectronic semiconductor applications: A combination of lithography and coating technology was used to create large area metallic nanotube arrays. This is to our best knowledge the world’s first metallic nanotube array. The metallic nanotube array has the advantage of large area productions without a lengthy process at inexpensive costs. It was not only published in a prestigious journal of Materials Today, but also was awarded the ACS Award at nanotech 2018 in Tokyo. In addition, it is expected to be suitable for the development of optoelectronic semiconductor components, such as micro LED. One of our recent works is “Improved Optical and Crystal Properties of ZnO Nanotubes via Metallic Glass Quantum Dots Underlayer” has been published in Journal of Materials Chemistry C.

Lab Introduction

Our research is related to a large vision of exploring intriguing quantum physics as well as novel and challenging applications in quantum information processing and quantum nanoscience. We investigate theoretically some of the pertinent and critical issues to advance the fields of quantum computing and quantum communication. Our group studies and characterizes the properties and dynamics of open quantum systems under the influence of decoherence (dissipation) and noise. We apply optimal control method to construct control pulses of high-fidelity universal quantum gates, robust against realistic noise and robust against system parameter uncertainty, for promising solid-state quantum computer systems, such as superconducting qubit system (pursued by IBM and Google) and silicon-based quantum-dot spin qubit system (pursued by Intel). With the establishment of IBM Q Hub at NTU, we explore how to devise quantum programming, algorithms and software that could enable machine learning, optimization problems, quantum simulations and molecular electronic structure calculations performed on the IBM Q quantum computer machine faster or more efficient than classical computers. We also investigate how to bridge the gap between theory and practice in actual quantum key distribution implementations and other quantum communication cryptography schemes.

The Computational Intelligence and Robotics (CIR) Lab was established in 2007. It is jointly supervised by Prof. Wei-Yen Wang, IEEE Fellow, and Prof. Chen-Chien Hsu, IET Fellow. Research areas of the CIR Lab include intelligent systems, neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary computation, digital control systems, mobile robot navigation, and robot learning from demonstration (LfD) systems. There are currently 23 members in the CIR Lab, including 1 postdoc researcher, 4 research assistants, 2 PhD students, 8 Master students, and 8 project students. Over the past years, the CIR Lab has excellent academic performances in terms of paper publications, patents, technology transfer, industry-academy cooperation projects, government-sponsored projects, as well as technological competitions. Over the past three years, a total of 12 projects with research funding up to 1 million USD have been awarded to Prof. Wang and Prof. Hsu to conduct robotic projects. Currently, the CIR Lab is focusing on the design and implementation of Robot Learning from Human Demonstration (LfD) system, which is jointly supported by National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) within the framework of the Higher Education Sprout Project by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Taiwan, and Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Taiwan, through Pervasive Artificial Intelligence Research (PAIR) Labs.

The research directions of our lab started from the computer architecture (CPU) and design automation (related CAD techniques) several years ago. These fields covered both hardware and software efforts. After years of research efforts, we have achieved many significant results that are recognized by both academy and industry. With such achievements, we are now ready to explore wider areas that are related to CPU's: the embedded systems. An embedded system is a computer (CPU)-based system that is specifically customized for and is embedded into some special applications. The AI Aquaculture Research team including prof. Chin-Chang Hung and prof. Ing-Jer Huang. We focus on building the software, hardware, and cloud environment of the monitoring system, establishing big data database of water quality, environmental parameters, and shrimps’/clams’ underwater images and behavior analytics. With the machine learning technology, the team is also able to build a future shrimp growth model, based on the number, size and moving speed of shrimps in the turbid ponds, for better results in maintaining healthy population growth. Further, the technology can turn the shrimp farmers’ decades’ worth of experience into digital data that can be passed down to successive generations.

Chi-Chuan Hwang was received the BS, MS and PhD degrees in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU). He is the Chair Professor in the Department of Engineering Science, NCKU. From 2011 to 2013 he has been the Director of Supercomputing Research Center of NCKU and is now the Director of Center of Excellence Computational Simulation, NCKU. His specialties and research interests include complex network, quantum computing, gene analysis and data assimilation. From National Science Council (NSC), R.O.C, he received ten consecutive Researcher Award from 1988 to 1997 and three consecutive Outstanding Researcher Award from 1999. He was also a NSC research fellow in 2005. Due to his contribution in Mechanics, he is a Fellow of Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, R.O.C. Moreover, he was awarded the Mechanic Medal of Sun Fang-Toh in 2007. He has published more than 150 journal papers.

Intelligent vision and autonomous mobility (iVAM) laboratory is a laboratory for cultivating the students with high-quality engineering talents and multidisciplinary integration capability. We are focusing on the implementation of high-level mechatronic design, intelligent robotic system, artificial intelligence and interdisciplinary integration. Our research interests consist of autonomous mobile robots, autonomous driving techniques, artificial intelligence, deep image learning and interactive cognitive learning. The ongoing projects are developing a campus autonomous electrical vehicle (AEV), simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) based mobile robot for factory material transport, autonomous manipulations combining with deep learning image based object detection and positioning, automatic optical inspection (AOI) for industrial inspections, etc. Especially, the iVAM AEV project was initiated in July 2017. We are trying to explore and experience very technical and hands-on details of constructing an autonomous electrical vehicle. Up to now, our AEV is able to perform a pilot run in NTUST campus in terms of 3D Lidar Odometry and Mapping (LOAM), GPS, image based segmentation and object detection. Lab Introduction

Our laboratory(Quantum Device Lab, QDL) focuses on the innovations and advanced studies in quantum electronic devices in particular superconducting devices for quantum information applications. Since 2004 we have established two dilution refrigerators and a complete line of high-speed and real-time microwave instruments at National Chung Hsing University. With these facilities we are able to characterize and test quantum processors based on transmons and X-mons. In the near future, we aim to implement machine learning algorithms for fully automated quantum processor testing. Our scientific research topics include charge transport in nanomaterials, such as single electronics and metal-insulator transitions, as well as development of physical and chemical sensors. Current research interests are quantum optics based on artificial atoms and microwave quantum meta-materials for studying topological photonics, ultra non-linear optics and quantum simulation with light. In addition, joint research with people at National Tsing Hua University and Academia Sinica are undertaken for building a superconducting quantum computer in Taiwan.

Lab Introduction

Big data such as thousands of rows and columns of spreadsheets are nearly impossible to analyze without proper tools, out lab develop visualization tools to let data analysis easier. One of our research topics is to apply deep learning strategies to recognize different types of parasitic eggs which can dramatically reduce identification time comparing to traditional manual inspections. We also develop AI-based method to analyze mass spectrometer data which is often used in highly accurate small molecular detection.

Lab Introduction

Imagine humans as complex dynamical systems: systems that are characterized by multiple interacting layers of hidden states (e.g., internal processes involving functions of cognition, perception, production, emotion, and social interaction) producing measurable multimodal behavior signals (e.g., body gestures, facial expressions, physiology, and speech). This abstraction of humans with a signals and systems framework naturally brings a synergy between engineering and behavioral sciences. Behavioral signal processing (BSP) offers a new frontier of interdisciplinary research between these communities. The core research in BSP is to mathematically model human behaviors with observational data, i.e., use computational methods grounded in statistics, signal processing, and machine learning to provide quantitative evidence that characterizes and tracks human internal states. The tangible outcome of BSP, i.e., behavioral analytics, offers new quantitative methods for enhancing the capabilities of domain experts in facilitating better decision making. The relevant application domains are diverse, ranging from behavior sciences, mental health, education, security, neuroscience, and personalized human-machine interfaces to user-centric commercial applications.

Lab Introduction

Members of the Machine Intelligence Group apply techniques of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing for analyzing texts, including but not limited to legal, financial, literary, and historical documents. Previous students won best paper awards for analyzing annual financial reports of public companies in USA, and prevailed in international competitions in textual entailment in NTCIR. In recent work, we apply deep learning methods to the problems of (1) extracting the gist of judgment documents of the Supreme Court and (2) word and sentence segmentation of classical Chinese texts. We plan to extend our experience in text analysis to the problem of identifying disinformation.

Lab Introduction

We are working on applying artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques in various interdisciplinary domains such music composition, lyrics generation and virtual singers, the other is the story generation in virtual drama. In multi-agent coordination, we are studying multi-drone in optimization of mission allocation and route planning in avoiding collision and threat under dynamic environment. We are also working on drug side effect prediction based on large scale of bioinformatics data base. In  our lab, currently there are around 15 domestic graduate students working as teams on the above topics. We currently also have two international students who are from South America in our group, and we welcome more international students to join in our group.

Thanks to ubiquitously available datasets, fast-growing computing power, and the latest innovative algorithms, AI continues to surprise us by changing the world at a rapid pace. In the Medical Data Analytics Laboratory (MeDA Lab), we think AI can lend us a big hand in staying healthy by enhancing medical image analysis.

Putting together talents and resources from the collaborated universities, enterprises, and the Taiwanese government, the MeDA Lab is in charge of building a world-leading platform for Artificial Intelligence for Medical Image Analysis (AIMIA Platform). AIMIA Platform consists of high-performance Artificial Intelligent Engine (AI Engine) and innovative Augmented Intelligence Workflows (AI Workflows), establishing a platform with interdisciplinary knowledge of artificial intelligence, medicine, high-performance computing, mathematics, and statistics. We help medical personnel tackle the upcoming challenges of precision medicine and aim to turn over a new leaf in the medical field in the next decade.

To ensure that our R&D efforts can benefit society broadly, we connect international and interdisciplinary researchers and professionals to foster academic excellence and commercial clinical applications. The multidisciplinary background of the team members provides multiple methodologies that are new in medical image analysis. The international connections further allow us to meet people and exchange ideas to be well informed and inspired by broad viewpoints. International collaborations are critical for medical solution verification and promotion globally.

In short, with the AIMIA platform led by our MeDA Lab, we are confident of realizing the goals to advance Taiwan as an AI innovation base for medical image analysis and its applications.

NanoMag Laboratory Founded in 1995, the NanoMag Laboratory of National DongHwa University (NDHU) focuses on the development of advanced physics research. The National Dong Hwa University Artificial Intelligence Lab (NDHU AL Lab) has specialized in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Computer Games. In these areas, NDHU AL Lab has published over 100 papers in international journals or conference proceedings. The Lab develops many strong board game programs including Go, Chinese chess, Dark chess, Connest6, and many puzzle games. These programs won the gold and other medals many times in Computer Olympiad, TAAI tournaments and TCGA tournaments since 2001. NDHU AL Lab got MOST AI Innovation Research project on AI Computer Games (PAIR@NDHU) from 2018 to 2021. The project is one of the most important AI projects in Taiwan.
